When Joseph Bonaparte, elder brother of Napoleon, exhibited his exquisite collection of 18th Century French paintings in the United States in 1815, the works whet the appetite of Americans for all things French. This exhibition considers the 18th Century American fascination with France and how the ideal of this period has continued to endure in the American imagination to this day.
