The process of painting colorful, glazed terra cotta sculpture was developed by Luca della Robbia around 1440. Passed down to his nephew and collaborator, Andrea, and produced in the family workshop for three generations from the 1440s to about 1530, the much-loved sculpture appreciated in value internationally even in its own time.
