Theaster Gates (b. 1973) explores the power of art and culture to transform experience. Gates' new body of work features several pieces created for the National Gallery of Art. The installation examines how discarded and ordinary objects, including the floor of a Chicago high school gym and the archives of Ebony Magazine, acquire value through stories we tell. Gates is only the fourth living artist to have an exhibition at the National Gallery of Art.
